Thrift Vinyl #3: Royal Dance Orchestra’s “Hour of American Waltzes”

by James Kaufholz

Every month, I go to the thrift store to buy a record. There are only two specifications for which record I buy:

1. It has to be by an artist I have never heard of.

2. It has to cost less than $5.

This is Thrift Vinyl. Enjoy.

I went to the thrift store with one goal in mind: to buy back what I had accidentally given away. This isn’t a deep sentiment that needs to be decoded; I literally some of Amy’s t-shirts to Goodwill, and I needed to buy them back. But to no avail. Amy’s shirts are still in the sea of old crap as we speak.

However, while I was there I decided to buy my vinyl for the month. Like most thrift stores, most of the records are old Christmas compilations – you really have to wade through them to find something non-Christmas-related. Finally, I found An Hour of American Waltzes performed by Royale Dance Orchestra.

Thrift Vinyl #2: Leo Addeo and His Orchestra’s “Hawaii’s Greatest Hits”

On our trip to Asheville, Amy and I had a few hours to kill. We made our way down the hill to Safe’s Attic, a consignment shop that uses its profits for battered women. The record section was in the back left of the small building, right beside tubs of old hats and used candlesticks.

There wasn’t a very large selection of records to choose from – candlesticks and hats were more their specialty. However, I ended up leaving Safe’s Attic with Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Hawaii’s Greatest Hits by Leo Addeo and His Orchestra. With a total of 45 cents for both records, I walked out with a perfect second installment of Thrift Vinyl.

Thrift Vinyl #1: Gary Ryan’s Me, Myself, and I

For the first installment of Thrift Vinyl, I decided to strictly go off of price. That way, I could hear just how bad the quality of a less-than-a-dollar record is. At the local Goodwill Thrift Store (where I will be buying most of my records) I found a faded black sleeve in the back of about a hundred old records, all sitting in the back corner of the store. The record is Me, Myself, and I by Gary Ryan – the word “RE-RELEASED” was plastered on the front. I purchased the album for a whopping .79 cents.
